The Tom Varilek Education Center at St. Vincent de Paul has partnered with Des Moines Area Community College to offer a HiSET Preparation course. The course is available to anyone 17 years or older who is not enrolled in high school. This is a course that can get students ready before they continue on to the Des Moines Area Community College, to begin the HiSET class. St. Vincent de Paul offers one on one tutoring to all of their students. Child care is provided on site at no charge during the class by the Mercy College of Health and Sciences. The HiSET test has taken the place of the GED test, but also consists of a series of five tests covering writing, science, math, reading and social studies.
Once students complete the HiSET Preparation course, they can go on the DMACC course confidently. Students can also return to St. Vincent de Paul for additional tutoring during their time at DMACC. Once they finish the program at St. Vincent de Paul , complete the class at DMACC, and pass the HiSET test at DMACC students are able to earn an equivalency to a diploma.
