The Center is a partnership between the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, The Directors Council and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Along with a grocery store located in the same building complex, the partnership is providing solutions to three crucial needs identified by local residents: workforce training, employment opportunities and grocery and retail services.

Polk County

Polk County was named after James K. Polk. He was the 11th President of the United States. Polk County was established in 1846.

The Office of The Sheriff
was instituted when the State of Iowa was granted Statehood in 1846. As the only elected law enforcement officer, the Office of Sheriff is unique in that the Sheriff is directly accountable to the people. The first Polk County Sheriff, Thomas Mitchell, took the Oath of Office on April 3, 1846. Our current Sheriff, Kevin J. Schneider, was appointed by the Polk County Board of Supervisors in December, 2018, and took the Oath of Office on December 18, 2018.

Hummel’s Nissan

Iowa’s #1 Nissan dealer has remained true to its roots, which trace back over three generations to 1929 when Henry Hummel and his two brothers began selling and repairing automobiles in Beaverdale. In the 1940s, Henry’s sons John, Hank and Bill operated the dealership extending the vehicle line-up and taking progressive steps to advance the company. By the late 1960s, the next generation of Hummel brothers further enhanced the dealership with the addition of the Datsun. True to the family’s innovation vision, in 1969 Hummel’s lead the automotive industry and became Iowa’s first Datsun dealer.

Bill Hummel eventually brought his brothers’ share of the business, and in 1978, Bill’s son Mark joined the dealership. Mark’s younger brothers, Kevin and Perry would soon follow and all three eventually purchased the family business. The three have developed Hummel’s Nissan into the company it is today, located on Merle Hay Road. They uphold the family values established by their grandfather over 85 years ago.

In the 1940s, the Merschman family opened their first furniture store in St. Paul, Iowa, starting a family tradition of excellence. Carl and Ina Merschman founded Homemakers Furniture in 1974. They purchased the former Gray’s Furniture Store, a 31,000-square-foot building on Hubbell Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa. The original furniture store opened with ten employees.
